About the Subclass 485 — Temporary Graduate
The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) allows recent international graduates of Australian institutions to live, study and work in Australia temporarily. It is a popular pathway for international students to gain Australian work experience after completing their studies, and often leads to permanent residence.
The 485 visa was significantly reformed in 2024-2025. As of 1 July 2026, the visa fee is AUD 5,750 (an increase from the previous AUD 4,640).
Three Streams
- Graduate Work Stream: For graduates of VET or trade qualifications in an occupation on the relevant skilled list. 18-month visa.
- Post-Vocational Education Work Stream: For graduates of VET (Diploma, Advanced Diploma) in any occupation. 2-year visa.
- Post-Higher Education Work Stream: For Bachelor, Master, or Doctorate graduates. 2-3 year visa (3 years for Master by Research / PhD).
Eligibility
- Recent graduate (less than 6 months since completion, applied onshore)
- Completed CRICOS-registered qualification of at least 2 years duration
- Held a student visa (subclass 500) at time of application
- Competent English (IELTS 6.5 each band for Post-Higher Ed, 6.0 for Graduate Work)
- Under 50 years of age
- Meet health and character requirements
- Skills assessment if applying for Graduate Work stream
Pathway to PR
The 485 visa is commonly used as a stepping stone to permanent residence. After gaining work experience in Australia, 485 holders can apply for:
- Subclass 189 Skilled Independent (points-tested)
- Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated (state sponsorship)
- Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional
- Subclass 482 employer-sponsored (after 1+ year experience)
- Subclass 186 ENS via employer nomination
Processing and Fees
Processing time for 485 is approximately 4-8 weeks. As of 1 July 2026, the visa application charge is AUD 5,750 for the primary applicant (a 25% increase from AUD 4,600 in March 2026).
