Subclass 186 — Employer Nomination Scheme

Subclass 186 — Employer Nomination Scheme

About the Subclass 186 — Employer Nomination Scheme

The Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186, ENS) is a permanent residence visa for skilled workers sponsored by an Australian employer. Unlike the temporary 482 visa, the 186 leads directly to permanent residence.

The 186 has three streams: Direct Entry (for applicants outside Australia or with limited Australian experience), Temporary Residence Transition (for 482/457 holders), and Labour Agreement (for specific industries).

Three Streams

  • Direct Entry Stream: For skilled workers from outside Australia or with less than 3 years of Australian experience. Requires skills assessment, competent English, and under 45 at time of application.
  • Temporary Residence Transition Stream: For 482 (Medium-term) or 457 visa holders who have worked for their employer for 3 of the last 4 years. Easier pathway, no skills assessment required.
  • Labour Agreement Stream: For occupations covered by labour agreements between the Australian Government and employers.

Can I apply for 186 from offshore?

Yes, via the Direct Entry stream, provided you have an Australian employer willing to nominate you.
