Subclass 407 — Training Visa

Note: Training visa (subclass 407) is for workplace-based occupational training or professional development. It is not a work visa and does not lead directly to permanent residence.

The Subclass 407 Training Visa is a short-stay visa for people travelling to Australia to take part in occupational training or professional development. With a 407 visa, you can attend work-based activities to meet occupational registration or licensing requirements, enhance skills in your occupation, take part in capacity building work overseas, gain continuing professional development (CPD) experience or training, and improve skills related to higher education studies.

A 407 Training Visa is generally valid for stays in Australia of up to two years. When issued, 407 visas are subject to condition 8102, which forbids work that is not related to the course or training specified as the basis for your visa application. You must also maintain valid health insurance whilst in Australia.

All Subclass 407 visa applications lodged on or after 11 March 2026 require:

1. What is the Training Visa (Subclass 407)?

The Subclass 407 Training Visa allows you to come to Australia for workplace-based occupational training or professional development that improves your skills in your current occupation, field of study, or area of expertise. Training may be provided by an Australian organisation (registered training provider) or by your overseas employer sending you to Australia for training with an Australian organisation.

Who this visa is for

  • People needing workplace-based training to obtain occupational registration, membership, or a licence
  • Overseas professionals seeking professional development in Australia
  • Capacity building workers from developing countries
  • Researchers undertaking formal programs of study or research
  • People enhancing skills related to higher education studies

How long it lasts

A 407 visa is valid for the duration of your training, typically between 6 months and 2 years. The Immigration Case Officer reviewing your application will decide the length based on the training you need.

What it allows

  • Participate in the approved training program
  • Travel in and out of Australia during the visa validity
  • Include eligible family members in your application

What it does NOT allow

  • Work outside the approved training activities (condition 8102)
  • Use the visa as a pathway to permanent residence
  • Engage in general employment
2. Subclass 407 Visa Requirements β€” Common Criteria

There are two eligibility pathways for the 407 visa. However, all applicants must show that they:

  • Have turned 18
  • Have functional English
  • Hold private health insurance for the duration of stay
  • Genuinely intend to stay temporarily in Australia for the intended purpose
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Are sponsored by an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor
3. The Two Eligibility Pathways β€” Occupational Trainees vs Professional Development

Pathway 1: Occupational Trainees

This stream requires a nomination by the sponsor to do one of the following activities in Australia:

  • Training for registration: Training required to obtain registration, membership or a licence to work in Australia or home country
  • Training for listed occupations: Training for an occupation on the 407 Training Visa Occupations List, with recent and suitable prior experience. Recent and suitable experience includes:
    • Employment or study experience equivalent to at least 12 months full-time in the occupation
    • Experience occurring in the 24 months immediately before the nomination is lodged
  • Overseas qualification: Up to 6 months of practical experience, research or observation required to obtain an overseas qualification
  • Government-supported training: Training supported by a government agency or the applicant's home government

Occupational training generally requires at least 70% of training to be on-the-job rather than classroom-based.

Pathway 2: Professional Development

This stream requires you to be working overseas in a management or professional position. Training is primarily classroom-based and must be in skills relevant to your current position.

4. Visa Conditions and Stay Period

The 407 visa is granted for a specific period, typically 6 months to 2 years, based on your training needs.

If you are outside Australia at time of grant

A 407 visa allows you to:

  • Travel to and enter Australia after your visa is granted
  • Remain in Australia during the stay period granted (up to 2 years), which begins on the day you first enter Australia

If you are in Australia at time of grant

A 407 visa allows you to remain in Australia during the stay period granted (up to 2 years), which begins on the date your visa is granted.

Work conditions

  • Condition 8102: Main applicant must not engage in work other than in relation to the holder's course of study or training
  • Condition 8104: Secondary applicants (family members) must not engage in work for more than 40 hours per fortnight while the holder is in Australia
5. Sponsorship and Nomination Requirements

You cannot apply for a 407 visa without a sponsor. The sponsor must be an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor (TAS).

Who can be a sponsor

Your sponsor can be:

  • An Australian business or organisation
  • A Commonwealth, state, or territory government agency
  • An Australian education or training institution
  • Your overseas employer (where the training is delivered in Australia)

Your sponsor cannot be a sole trader or an individual.

What the nomination must include

  • Training activities and duration
  • Location and supervision arrangements
  • How the training enhances your skills
  • Qualifications or outcomes to be achieved
6. Appropriate Qualifications and Experience

Nominees for a 407 visa must have appropriate qualifications and/or experience to undertake their planned occupational training.

The Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) will generally consider this requirement met if the applicant can provide a letter from the registering regulatory body in Australia (or the nominee's home country) confirming that the nominee has appropriate qualifications or experience to undertake the occupational training.

Alternatively, DOHA can make a judgement based on the applicant's qualifications and work experience as set out in the CV/resumΓ© provided in their application.

For further detail on the level of qualification or experience necessary to perform a given occupation in Australia, you may wish to consult the Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA).

Special case: Health practitioners

Health practitioners who will treat patients as part of their occupational training are required to have conditional registration from the relevant national or state/territory regulatory body. Nominations for health practitioners must include a letter from the relevant registration authority advising that the nominee has the required conditional registration and is legally permitted to undertake occupational training involving the treatment of patients.

The processing time for a Subclass 407 Training Visa can vary depending on Australian authorities' workload and backlog, and how straightforward or complex your application is to assess.

  • 50% of applications: processed within 3 months
  • 90% of applications: processed within 9 months

If your current visa is due to expire, we may be able to lodge your 407 application and secure permission to remain in Australia on a bridging visa while you wait for it to be processed.

9. Path to Permanent Residence

The 407 visa does not lead directly to permanent residence. However, the training may enhance your skills and qualifications, making you eligible to apply for:

  • Employer-sponsored visas (482, 186) if an Australian employer sponsors you
  • Other skilled pathways depending on your new qualifications

If you are considering a long-term migration pathway, our registered migration agents can assess your eligibility for skilled migration after your 407 training is complete.
