Subclass 189 — Skilled Independent Visa

Note: The Subclass 189 is a permanent residence visa for points-tested skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, state/territory, or family member.

The Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa allows highly skilled workers to live and work permanently in Australia. The visa operates through the SkillSelect Expression of Interest (EOI) system and is awarded to applicants who meet the points-test threshold for their nominated occupation on the MLTSSL (Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List).

The 189 is the most flexible skilled migration pathway — no employer or state sponsorship required — but also the most competitive, with many occupations requiring 80–95+ points to receive an invitation.

Apply to the relevant assessing authority (Engineers Australia, VETASSESS, ACS, AHPRA, etc.). Only their assessment is accepted by DHA.

Stage 3: Expression of Interest (EOI)

Lodge your EOI via SkillSelect. No documents needed at this stage, but you must evidence all claims if invited. EOI valid for 2 years and can be updated.
