Vocational Training and Education
Australia’s vocational education and training (VET) institutions offer students the opportunity to learn in real and simulated work environments. Referred to in other parts of the world as technical colleges or institutes, they allow students to gain practical expertise in the workplace that will give them an advantage when starting on the job.
At these institutions, students can study a wide range of disciplines, including: business and management, science and technology, design and arts, communications, sport and recreation, community service and health, tourism and hospitality, engineering and building, horticulture and land management and English.
Programs are provided by government run Technical and Further Education (TAFE) Institutes, private colleges and a number of schools and universities. Industry and government work together to develop training outcomes, which are then implemented according to nationally endorsed training packages. Courses start at Certificate level (I, II, III, IV) and then go up to Diploma and Advanced Diploma.
This training can also be used as a pathway to other avenues of higher education. Depending on the qualification, universities may provide you with credit towards a Degree. This gives students the practical skills as well as the theory from a university Degree.
VET courses range from $2,000 – 8,000 for 6 month Certificate courses and Diplomas generally start at around $7,000 – 12,000.
